Topic 4: Memory, Learning & Improving
Concentration
What is memory?
Memory is the power or process of reproducing
or recalling what has been learned and retained.
Type of memories :
1. Sensory memory
- Sensory information is stored in sensory
memory just long enough to be transferred to short term memory.Humans have
five traditional senses: sight, hearing, taste, smell, touch. Sensory memory (SM) allows individuals to
retain impressions of sensory information after the original stimulus has
ceased.National Training Laboratory, suggests that most students only remember
about 10% of what they read from textbooks, but retain nearly 90% of what they
learn through teaching others. So student must use all of their sensor when
study because it is more effective than only use one of their sensor.
2. Short-term memory
- Short term memory is is the capacity for
holding, but not manipulating, a small amount of information in
mind in an active, readily available state for a short period of time. For
example, short-term memory can be used to remember is believed to be in the
order of seconds.
3. Long-term memory
- Long term memory consists of anything you
remember that happened more than a few minutes ago. Long term memories can last
for days or even years. The capacity of long term memory can be unlimited. It
is a system of permanently storing, managing and retrieving information, which
can be used later.
